“In the scientific race to quell climate change, the global clean-energy technology market has become the fastest growing industry in the world. By 2020, China will double its ability to generate its energy from renewable sources and plans to invest US$200 billion to get there. US president Obama is expected to invest US$150 billion in a similar plan.”
“Access to energy is needed for growing prosperity, not carbon emissions – the unwanted byproduct. Growing prosperity in the 21st century must therefore take carbon out of the equation.”
“What we have got is capability around renewable energy. We led the world in the development of geothermal energy throughout the 1950s and 60s. A lot of geothermal energy now being generated around the world is being run by engineers that we trained in New Zealand,” says Mulcare.
“A lot of that forestry resource will be owned by Iwi and there’s a lot of technologies that we’ve seen around about how you use that forest biomass and residues for value-added applications from biofuel to chemicals,” says Mulcare.
“What we’re trying to do is get some thinking around climate change as an opportunity. This could be our vehicle for economic transformation,”
says Mulcare.
