Tararea, currently under development, is a luxury New Zealand perfume focusing primarily on Taramea (Speargrass/Aciphylla Aurea) which is historically known as the key compound in the formation of “The Grand Maori Perfume.”
Taramea will follow Maori philosophies and protocols around land stewardship and tikanga framework. The plant resource will be carefully managed, not depleted by overharvesting and the end products will use Taramea in a way that reflects its cultural importance, therefore not losing its treasured value (taonga) and uniquness (tapu).
Reintroduction of perfumery to Maori is an opportunity to strengthen a positive international perception of Maori and reinforce Maori’s international tourism brand and cultural identity in a similar way that perfume holds an important place in strengthening the historic identity of French, Egyptian and Persian cultures.
